Celebrating August the TWO

August the TWO is the day set aside for celebration of the Icelandic Heritage and freedom. Like many "new world" countries, it was founded by rogues. They were banned from Norway, and set asea in what was then seen as a form of capital punishment. These Norwegian men, along with kidnapped Irish women, established a sturdy, hard working, reddish blond society that has become Iceland today. The country is far from a wasteland, built on volcanic rock and boasting numerous hot water springs, stunning fjords, and pretty islets and streams. The fishing industry flourishes today, as well as the Icelandic sheep which produce very soft, strong, beautiful, and waterproof yarn. Thus has been born a cottage industry of outstanding knitwear. The warm and durable coats and sweaters boast intricate intarsia designs in earthy colors and are sold at premium prices worldwide.

It is entirely fitting that a blogsite about knitting and life, written by an Icelandic Grandma, give tribute to this country and it's brave founders. HAPPY AUGUST the TWO to all persons of Icelandic heritage, and those who know and love them ! XOXOXOXO
