Today on Facebook I declared myself a fan of Captain Sullenberger. This guy is clearly hero material -- having exactly 3.5 minutes to make the decisions which were life and death for 155 people.
He is clearly very intelligent, very well trained and experienced.
He is also 57 years young -- middle aged-- gray haired....
I have come to realize that by middle age, values are well defined, and experience and judgment become equally as important as knowledge and intellect. A new college grad is brimming with up to date information. However, with age comes the ability to view the big picture, a store of knowledge gleaned from multiple trial and error, a calm realization that we are only small pieces of the whole... courage to do what must be done even if it has never been done before.
"We will be in the Hudson." he said. And amazingly, that's where they were.
