Welcome Lucas Martin

March 26-- It has been a very memorable week for me. I flew to Chicago last Friday to be at the baptism of my new grandson, Lucas. He wore a candlelight suit of silk (taffeta.) He looked like a small prince and behaved perfectly. I think he looks a lot like his dad, but I do see some of his mom in his expressions. A friend of mine in Guatemala suggested that he resembles Winston Churchill!

Bismarck is about 50% under water today as ice jams on the Missouri have caused massive water and sewer backup. About 4000 people have been evacuated. 3 elementary schools have had to move their students, and businesses all over town, including Kirkwood Mall have closed.

My two youngest boys have been sandbagging, FEMA's presence is everywhere and the Army Corps have been dynamiting the ice jams in an effort to move the water out. I was astounded to hear that Garrison Dam, for the first time in history, had quit producing water for the time being. They have enough water and electricity stored for several days and are choosing not to contribute to the problem.

I have been well impressed by the people who have offered their homes and the many churches who have provided food, clothing, and other needs. Governor Hoeven says even the sandbaggers are out in huge numbers. No one seems to be panicked and neighbors are quick to help each other. The shelters report only a very few people with no place to go. On Monday and Tuesday, when my flight out of MSP was delayed and/or cancelled again and again, I wondered why I live in North Dakota. Today I am reminded clearly and forcefully. This place truly lives the Lord's request that we be our brother's keeper. XOXO Noanie
