Guatemala was everything I'd hoped and much more. Days were all in the 80s and I never did shut my window at night. Flowers were everywhere, and the city of Antiqua was painting and cleaning for the great feast of Easter. I wish I'd packed more shorts-- and some cooler sox. Life was much simpler. We walked everywhere and ate mostly fruits and veggies. I saw many, many good friends and was able to feed and rock babies to my hearts content. There is nothing that crosses cultural lines more readily than a tiny person's smile.
These are some of the Bedoya kids. Jacqueline is the daughter of Zoila, and David, Diana, and Donilo belong to my Godson, luis and his wife Nora.
There were 15-16 babies at Casa Jackson while I was there. Nine were bottle fed-- often with coaxing, and 6 were spoon fed-- frijoles, rice, soft white cheese, some veggies. Some had other medical problems but all were malnourished. A few were not "skinny" but still sick from a diet of coffee or Coca cola. H ere are a few babes I had the honor of taking care of.
Celso, Selvin, Myrna, Luis, and Daniel.
I also went to Spanish School-- 1 on 1 with a tutor for 4 hours a day in the morning. Now if only I had someone to regularly practice with.
More pix to come soon.
Happy Easter to everyone in Blogland!
